With only a few hours until 2015 is upon us, I wanted to reflect on some of my favorite moments of 2014. This is a little bit of a countdown of my favorite and most memorable events from the past year. We were incredibly fortunate this year and had the pleasure of being involved in a variety of events. For one reason or another these are the ones that standout most to me. It is really cool that we get to do this every day, we are part of events that at times we may take for granted because these events can be changing the lives of people in small and big ways. These events were all different sizes with different budgets but they were all special to me for one reason or another. We hope everyone has a fantastic New Year and we can’t wait to see what we help create in 2015!
#10 – 5th Annual MME Linen Show
Last March, we hosted our 5th Linen Show at the Brookstreet Hotel. We started this as a way for people to see what linens would look like all set up for their big days. We set up over 60+ tables to inspire clients. I can’t believe this idea that Scott had has grown in to what it has become. Mark your calendars for the 6th installment coming this March!
#9 – Movies at the Beach
This was the second summer we have helped provide concessions for movies at various beaches in the summer. I think this was especially great this year because we saw our son really step outside his comfort zone and gain some confidence as he was helping out with deliveries. He can be painfully shy at times but he really warmed up to the hosts and came in to his own before starting Grade 1 in the fall.
#8 – Ottawa Wedding Awards
It is so cliché to say it was an honour just to be nominated but it is true. We were privileged to be included in a fantastic group of local vendors for the 1st Ottawa Wedding Awards that took place in May. We spent the evening among friends and colleagues to celebrate the great people who make up the Ottawa wedding community. We were very proud and humbled to take home the award for Best Supplier as well as being included in the Best Wedding of the Year. (Thank you to Stonefields Heritage Farm, Quality Entertainment and Thyme & Again Catering for including us in the event)
#7 – Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life
For the past 6 years I have been the event coordinator for the local Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life (Ottawa). I get to work with the coolest, most passionate group of people, many of whom I now consider friends. Despite all the pre-planning, the weather was not on our side and the torrential rains may have kept some people away but the spirit of those dedicated individuals could not be dampened. I may have been waterlogged but I was energized and the event continues to help raise much needed funds and awareness for 7 local agencies that provide HIV/AIDS support within the Ottawa community.
#6 – M & M’s August wedding
By trade, I am not a wedding planner, an event planner yes, but wedding’s take a special touch. I was so excited that I got to take on this role for two very special couples this summer. M & M’s wedding was a day filled with love as they celebrated the start of their married life at the home of the groom’s parents. With the Ottawa River providing a breath-taking backdrop the love of family and friends surrounded the happy couple. It was great to be included in such a group and to have been trusted to help pull it together.
#5 – A & J’s August wedding
This wedding was over a year in the planning. A & J asked me to be part of their event over a year before it was scheduled to take place. Knowing A, and how much of a perfectionist she is did scare me because I just wanted so badly to deliver her a perfect day. I love how these two had a small and intimate wedding as they celebrated with an evening of conviviality with the people they loved most in the world. The bride and the groom were first to hit the dance floor and the last to leave. I spent two days alongside their friends and family and I think it was a magical weekend for everyone.
#4 – Newfoundland Kitchen Party in support of Bruce House
Because of my role in the AIDS Walk I started volunteering where I could with Bruce House. I was flattered to be asked to be part of the planning team that was putting on a new event to benefit Bruce House. Who wouldn’t want to drink samplings of local beer and listen to great East Coast music?? Chase and I spent the day helping set up at the Glebe Community Centre and he was so proud of everything he had done. It is great to show them how to be involved in the community however they can. The event was a hit with everyone ‘Kissing the Cod’. I know where I will be this January 31 as we put on the 2nd annual Kitchen Party. I’m pretty excited to dust off my cowboy boots for the Western edition of the event. Tickets are on sale now
#3 – Mad Science Birthday Party
#3 and #2 are a toss up. My favorite parties of the year are always my kid’s birthday parties. Chase was so excited about his mad science party (entertainment by Radical Science by Little Rays) it was great to be able to do this for him and create memories that I hope he will look back on and smile. He will probably be smiling because he realizes his mother is a lunatic. It was his idea for the theme so he was pretty pumped for the whole day. I love how Dominique Gibbons captured the little moments that are really us as a family.
#2 – Paint Party
Because our daughter is the girliest of girls, I was trying to find a gender neutral party since her friends are mostly little boys, but still let her have the sparkles she craves. This was a great afternoon for parents and kids, the mandatory appearance of a princess happened (thank you Official Princess Parties) but I think there was something for everyone despite the variety of ages of our friends children. Again, thank you to Dom for capturing this special day for Bryn. IzzyBizzyCakes made this custom creation for us and it was just as delicious as it looks! Bryn is already counting down to her next party and has big plans for me. I probably should have started planning already.
#1 – Best Day Ever
This is probably the most memorable event not because of its size or budget or event the clients but because we got to work with a crazy talented team. The Best Day Ever Ottawa was an event to showcase two themed wedding vow renewals. I was excited to be working with the creative vision provided by TOAST Events and the number of vendors she had on her team. Over the years we have worked with various professionals but this was a unique opportunity to connect with them on a different level. I loved seeing what everyone did and what they contributed to the team. It was probably one of my favorite memories because it was a collaborative venture on all fronts. We personally made some great partnerships through this event and I look forward to working with these exceptional professionals in 2015.

2014 was definitely a learning year for us. We faced challenges we didn’t necessarily expect and I think we came out stronger because of it. We were excited to rediscover and reconnect with past clients and partners and value their business and trust and will continue to work to build on that. Again, from our team at Mastermind, thank you, and we wish everyone reading this much health and happiness in the New Year.
